Issued from 1880 to 1929
National Bank Notes were issued by state banks that had obtained a federal charter and deposited sufficient funds with the U.S. Treasury. This deposit allowed them to print their own currency, and the bank was assigned a Charter Bank number, which was imprinted on each note produced. These notes are quite scarce and usually collected by city or state, with the grade being secondary to the bank issuing the note.
